Is this segment, we spotlight some of the many interesting radio stations that are currently broadcasting around the world. We want to put a face on some of the many stations that WARM monitors and show just how much quality and variety still exists in radio programming today. We will especially be looking at stations who do a lot to support emerging and ‘alternative’ music. Today, we look at New Jersey's WFMU.
WFMU is an iconic American radio station based in Jersey City, New Jersey.
It's been called the best radio station in the United States by Rolling Stone Magazine, been profiled in publications like the New York Times, won several awards and has a long list of famous fans and admirers.
WFMU started broadcasting over 60 years ago as part of a university in East Orange, New Jersey but went fully independent in the mid-1990s. It's currently the longest-running freeform radio station in the United States, meaning that their DJs have complete control over what music they play, regardless of genre and commercial interests.
This forms the basis of WFMU's awesome reputation for highly original and diverse programming.
In their own words, the programming ranges 'from flat-out uncategorizable strangeness to rock and roll, experimental music, 78 RPM Records, jazz, psychedelia, hip-hop, electronica, hand-cranked wax cylinders, punk rock, gospel, exotica, R&B, radio improvisation, cooking instructions, classic radio airchecks, found sound, dopey call-in shows, interviews with obscure radio personalities and notable science-world luminaries, spoken-word collages, Andrew Lloyd Webber soundtracks in languages other than English as well as Country and western music.'
In addition to this, program titles like 'Spin Age Blasters', 'Sophisticated Boom Boom', 'Music of Mind Control', and 'Morricone Island' give you a small indication of the many interesting experiences you're in for when tuning into WFMU which you can do right here.
